I can’t post this week’s Shane Douglas episode because the audio is just too atrocious. Last week’s was bad, but somehow this week’s is even worse and the microphone drops out so many words or sounds underwater that it’s nearly unintelligible. Considering we’ve recorded shows on an iPhone as a last resort before, it’s baffling why the audio during the last recording session went from “barely passable” to “utterly unacceptable”. So I’m eating the cost of booking Shane and just not posting it.
Now, this isn’t a case of “just buy a new microphone” to improve the audio quality. We did that already. This is a case of a bizarre confluence of circumstances that seem to consistently trip us up at the last minute before recording. Our original recording method with the old microphone was fine until a mandatory software update stopped the microphone working entirely. Then we tried various new means of working it through a conventional laptop, but for whatever reason, the laptop wouldn’t recognise the microphone, or camera, or both – even with a professional setting it up. It’s just more software issues that’s nobody’s fault except the people who make this stuff as incompatible as humanly possible.
Here’s the good news - We’ve finally worked out the software and audio issues (see the Scott Norton interview on WSI - it looks and sounds great) but it’s been hugely frustrating trying to put out high quality product – something I pride myself on in this sphere of wrestling podcasts with shitty audio/video recorded directly from the integrated laptop hardware. As I’m sure a lot of you know, I’m a stickler for quality video and ESPECIALLY quality audio wherever it can be helped... at least at my end. I was going to visit Dutch next month to sort out his camera equipment so it looked as good as mine, but that trip will have to wait until further down the line due to a change in my family's circumstances, and trust me, that annoys me greatly, because although the video is perfectly serviceable, it could always be better!
Now here’s the bad news - It’s a matter of WHEN we can next record. Shane can only do certain weekends, and for various reasons (my aforementioned family circumstances, pre-booked trips, other work) I have almost no weekends available for at least 2 months. Plus I work every day already so I cannot do mid-week – and who wants to work rare weekends off?
Even if Shane and I only record occasionally from now on when we can both make it (which I assure you will happen as I thought our in-depth big show reviews were excellent and important and still have tonnes of steam left in them), I’ll make sure to update you here and on the WSI Twitter; but for the short term the podcast is going to have to go on hiatus because we simply don’t have much crossover availability any more. I know this will make Chael Sonnen very unhappy, but that’s about where we are at this point.
Sorry to all who enjoyed the show - Any further news and I'll let you know.
But hey, at least we never resorted to filming a shoot interview at an indoor pool...
