Be Honest… What Stops You from Making More Art?

You want to make art. You love making art. And yet… days, maybe weeks, go by without touching your sketchbook. Why is that?

Maybe life gets busy. Maybe you second-guess every creative decision. Maybe you just don’t know where to start.

Vote in the poll, then tell me: What’s one thing that would help you create more?

@sjferguson

My depression. It's hard for me to get motivated. I want to, and I know it will help me feel better but the motivation to do it is just not there. Depression sucks 😞

I actually have no idea what to creat most of all, and 2nd reason is being afraid if It is not enough.. and No time as well.. all can be reasonable :) But Not giving up is to creat beautiful works :)

Pushing it off. I think about it constantly. How I'm going to make some art bc of this idea or that triggered by whatever. Then when I have the opportunity say late at night I'll either get stuck scrolling on my phone maybe looking for a reference pic or a tutorial so I don't have to think as much. Next I know it's midnight and can't start now. The worst part is majority of the time I'll get everything ready. Which paper or sketchbook I'm gonna use, which paints/colors, sometimes even get the sketch done too so I literally have nothing to do but to just sit down and start. Yet I don't. Or rarely do. When for a while there I was consistently creating something new almost daily. Now I can't even get myself to complete a sketchbook page or painting in entirety. It is frustrating to say the least.

For the longest time it was that it won't be good enough. That's until I realized that nobody is good from the beginning and it takes years of practice to reach "good enough". So now I have finally started learning.

A few reasons: I fear creating something I hate or doesn’t “look good” I don’t necessarily have a dedicated space - my work desk is also my sewing desk is also my arts table I’m too busy lol

For me the answer would be to clone myself, so that I could tackle all the family needs, the jumble of my anxious brain, and my deep devotion to God every day to the full. I'm the type who wants to be everything for everyone, and find little left at the end of the day for me. Not a pity party here, just reality. I love spreading love and joy around, and couldn't live without the giving. [Thanks, Shayda! In that little venting, I just verbalized my inner conflict and found it to be a blessing!] 👩🏻‍🎨✝

Knowing techniques and doing them well. Maybe I just don’t make art enough, but when I want to make something that I’ve never made before I totally freeze up and get frustrated.

@cm_watercolours

I think there are so many things I want to try and paint, that I get overwhelmed and just can't do anything.

@britthartart

I just need to prioritize my time and set aside an hour or two for creating each day.

Biggest reason is work life balance, with RTO, that just got way more out of balance. Having a dedicated space for art is the second hurdle. All the others can be overcome 3-4 days a week.

All of the above 😩

@MaryGoodall

I end up needing free time, materials handy, other chores completed, etc. before I'll allow myself to paint. And then it doesn't happen very often.

As I age I find my endurance is limited. I have to stop the flow and all it takes is a cold I can’t fight off or external stressors and I don’t finish. Lately I’ve been doing less “creative”thing’s so I get them done. My mind is spinning with some new things I want to do. When I was younger I’d get more done even though I was more busy.

Being honest. I hate how lonely making art can be with no community to be part of. I miss my college art classes immensely for feedback and general geeking over art to share. Now that I'm back in my home state all I have are people married or into normal watch TV/movie or video game schedules. I will sew or embroider from time to time while watching out of boredom though. Basically I miss making art with others and it feels empty alone.

Couldn't the days have 48 hours, please?! 🙏 😂 Allright, I can manage with 30. Couldn't be 30, at least?
