One unit responding to a missing child is going to gather info and begin a(very limited) search, hoping for more resources to come help. One unit responding to a DV/battery/assault can end the incident immediately. Depends on the details of the call to decide for sure, but probably the DV.

I’m going to the DV. Notify County or State about the missing child and ask for an assist. There was a missing child call I was an EMT where PD asked if us and Fire could cruise around the area and look. Just because in this scenario I’m the only LEO available doesn’t mean I’m the only Public Safety asset in town.

Difficult question Domestic violence calls are one of the top deadliest calls for cops. You should never go without backup.

Was a police officer. Domestic Violence call is a higher priority call.

Unless there is knowledge that the child was ABDUCTED, the DV call should get priority... the typical missing child case turns out to be nothing nefarious WAY more frequently than the nightmare situation, and the small bit of extra time to get a county officer to respond probably won't change anything about the outcome in the child missing incident. In the DV situation, those few minutes could very well be the difference between an irate man going to jail for terroristic threats, and an irate man going to jail for murder.

I’m shocked the DV response is sitting at 19%, that is far and away the most dangerous, volatile, potentially deadly situation.

It looks like half of the responders rely on emotions rather than logic.

I'd relay the information about the missing child to State Police on my way to the DV call. State Police could begin locking down interstates or even respond on our behalf, and there's a higher chance that the child wandered off and will be located. However, there's an imminent threat of harm to a victim in a DV call. That's a very tough call, everyone feels a sense of responsibility to protect a child, but I'd hate to go there first, be told thatbtheybfoumd them, and learn that a woman succumbed to her injuries by an abuser...

I’m very surprised that calling for back up so both can be handled is so low.

To anyone who likes these thought experiment style posts: I highly recommend you try out the video game This Is The Police. You'll have to make these kinds of decisions, decide if calls are worth your time or not, decide how crooked you want to be, it is a magnificent time management game with a very complex and nuanced look inside the life of a police officer. Plus the soundtrack is excellent deep cut jazz music.

If back-up is an option, are you really the only available unit ?

One Unit, but two calls to 911, Missing Child will be immediately addressed while on 911, send the detectives and higher ups to the to the Missing Child.

If I were the only unit avail; I would think the dispatcher would send me to the first one or closest one and possibly have a sergeant or lieutenant take the other call

Kids are dumb and get lost and walk off all the time. Statistics say the kid will likely be found. Violence takes priority. Missing from a playground does not mean ABDUCTED from a playground. You don't need a badge to look for a kid.

This is the thought invoking material thats been missing! Keep it up with the hypothetical scenarios!

It’s crazy how almost 50% of you chose “Missing Child from playground” as first priority! The child is NOT in immediate danger!! 🤦♀️ DV is VERY SERIOUS. Someone whose getting b3at up can d1e!! THEY ARE CURRENTLY IN DANGER. Happens TOO MUCH! Doesn’t matter that they’re an “adult.” Use your brains!! 🤦

First off dispatch is supposed to make that choice not me. Second, in the domestic situation there is more immediate threat and less help. A missing child usually has family or friends already starting to call or walk around to look for the missing child.

Daily Dose Of Crime
You're the only unit available and receive two simultaneous calls: a domestic violence in progress and a report of a child missing from a playground. Both situations require immediate response, but you can only go to one first. Which do you choose?
