I used to say Red, but Ash has a stronger team now and has beaten absurdly strong trainers like Leon, Cynthia and Steven. He’s not the idiot trainer he was in earlier seasons. He is an unconventional wild card

Red is the kid who only trains his starter, Ash is the kid who spends time grinding EXP with all of his team and does all the side quests.

Honestly by this point especially after defeating Leon I do think Ash has the ability to beat red but it all depends on which Pokémon they both bring. So honestly for me it’s a toss up

For so long it would have been Red, but now Ash has access to all sorts of gimmicks and Pokémon that he would win.

I always hate when this debate is brought up because people always treat Red like this god of Pokemon training when he's just as carried as Ash seems to be. We are Red's plot armor, he would not be where he is if it was not for the person controlling him and once away from our control, he's just like any other NPC just with higher level Pokemon. Doesn't switch except for rare occasions and uses 3-4 Full Restores max. Him "catching them all" doesn't mean anything if he pulls up with the same 6 Pokemon each time. I am not saying Ash takes this easy, not at all. For all the mocking I do, Red is still very strong. I am just saying if Ash assembled the strongest Pokemon he had and Red comes with his signature six, the result would be much closer than people believe at least in my opinion.

Ill say ash because I feel battling in the anime is way more difficult than in the game like there is no wait your turn and stuff

If this was ash from the late 90s and early 2000s then yea my money would be on red but honestly as the series continued ash kept getting stronger and even has some powerful pokemon like goodra and noivern

Red is a self-insert protagonist. He also canonically loses to the protagonist in GSC and SM and has the potential to lose in B2W2. The feats of Red, while great, are also equally par with every other Protagonist from every other game, minus saving the world. Not to mention the quality of NPC trainers is very low in comparison to irl Pokemon tournaments or even the Anime. Even Red as a NPC trainer is low quality. Ash is a very accomplished trainer as of this point and is only getting stronger. And if you remove your self-insert, you'll see Red has no chance. He hasn't had a real chance for a long time now.

Ash stomps, battles in the anime are way more complicated than in-game. And Ash won a world championship rather than a regular Pokémon league, with a team that didn't have all his strongest mons. And if we're taking all the games as canon, Red loses to various main characters throught the games, including the MCs of gen 2 and 7. He's a champion level trainer, but not the God that people seem to think he is.

Red was defeated by a kid in hawaii that just beat the island trial 💀 He is only famous because he helped dismantle Team Rocket

It was still an unknown question. Pokemon Masters already did hint the battle between both of them, but we'll never knows

Depends on the context. Is it OG Red in G/S/C and HG/SS? Is it Kanto Ash or Sinnoh Ash? Because it changes things a lot. In earlier regions, Red has the advantage up until say, Hoenn. I say this since Hoenn is where Ash's battle skills start to develop, to the point where he can fight (and win) against Frontier Brains. He also has unorthodox strategies and can make disadvantages advantageous. He's a wild card.

Just giving a reminder that ash has the hidden ability "anime friendship" and when paired the item 'narratively convenient flashbacks', it raises his Def. and special def. By 200 stages, so he can rival the power of arceus

Ash has a million times more experience and accomplishments than Red but people are too blinded by game bias + nostalgia to acknowledge that

People acting like Red didn't get flattened by four other Pokémon protagonists already
