They were against Gnosticism. I can’t believe so many people answered that. Gnostics came mostly from Pharisee Jews and a small group of Christian’s that were mostly killed around Constantine.

‘Ossim (Gk. ‘hoi Essenoi’) means ‘doers’ i.e. of the Torah— were a breakaway Saduceean sect of strict Torah abiding priestly ‘sons of Zadok’ (‘tzadukkim’) who ‘broke away from the illicit Camp of Yerushalayim which is the chief of all the camps scattered around Yisro’el in the Last Days’ c. 154 BCE (to 68 CE) which according to their own foundation documents (MMT = miqsat ma’aseh ha Torah’ = some [discussions] regarding the works of the Torah) followed the near assassination of the then-High Priest [‘Yehudah’ ?] who managed to ‘flee to safety to Damasqim’ (= the Fortess of Seccacah, aka Khirbet Qumran south of Yerushalayim upon the high cliffs/caves around the Dead Sea) with a loyal band of zadokite followers to built a monastery for the ‘true sons of Zadok’ (‘real Saducees’) who have separated themselves from the ‘evil sons of darkness’ in Yerushalayim in order to prepare the way in the desert (cf Isaiah ch 40:1-3) for the coming of the ‘two messiahs of Yisroel and Aaron’ in the Last Days…during the Greek occupation of Judaea … Their complaints against the Saducees in Yerushalayim that ran the highly profitable temple sacrificial system included (according to MMT) : ‘The lunar calendar followed by the camp at Yerushalayim has caused the holy festivals of Torah to be celebrated as moveable feasts throughout the calendar year over time thus the Solar Calendar which nails down the same dates year by year for each feast punctiliously — something the Camp at Yerushalayim should be mindful of in terms of accuracy as they are the chief of all the Camps of Yisro’el to avoid bringing down the Curses of Mosheh upon the heads of qol-Yisroel…’ and then begins to list in tiresome detail all 24 priestly courses as they are to serve for their 2 weeks (six months apart) in the temple [‘with 2 priestly courses per year having to serve three times] on a consistent rotational calendar…’ Then lists 22 reasons (Torah based cultic rituals) why the ‘priests serving at Yerushalayim have been in error’ e.g. Item : priests at the Camp of Yerushalayim are in error in performing the heave offering as the push the offering towards the altar then retract when it rightfully according to the strictest letter of Torah should be doing the exact opposite…’ ‘Item : they moreover are bringing in vessels into the Holy (baQodesh) with handles made of ritually-unclean animal hides including swine flesh thereby desecrating the holy sacrifice and affronting YHWH … Item : they also are allowing goyyim free entry into the Holy spaces bringing in broths of the gentiles who had been sacrificing to their gods…something that is ritually defiling according to Torah… Item : they even mix ritually pure liquids with ritually unclean liquids together in the same vessel declaring the admixture to be ‘ritually clean & acceptable for sacrifice’ which is likewise To’qebah (a ritual abomination’) as it is impossible once two separate liquids are mixed and poured into a single vessel ever to be able to separate ‘clean’ from ‘unclean’ … Item : it has come to our attention that the holy priests of the camp of Yerushalayim whose seed is most holy are defiling themselves by marrying gentile women and producing mamzerim (‘bastards’) thereby defiling the holy seed of the priestly Zadokites thereby rendering their sacrifices null & void and endangering all Yisro’el by such abominations …’ and so on… These ‘breakaway items’ were sent to ‘the head priest of the camp of Yerushalayim in the form of a ‘letter of correction’ explaining why the ‘Ossim fled to ‘Damasqim’ (the plural form of Damascus) ‘as it is clear that there are some of you in the Camp who are very knowledgeable about these Torah precepts and would be able to see that we are right in our objections…in order to stave off the possibility of the curses of Mosheh falling upon the heads of qol-Yisro’el and for the greater good of all of us…’ These ‘Ossim went by 22 names e.g. ‘the sons of Light’, ‘sons of the everlasting plantation in the last days’, ‘sons of the rebuilders of the Breach’, ‘sons of Peace’ [mentioned by R. Yehoshua bar Yosef the Galilean Nazir [c. BCE 13/12 to 36 CE in Luke 10:6 referring to the married sects of ‘Ossim living in the outer camps of Yisro’el’] and many others … These main core at Seccacah-Qumran were celibates who had given up fleshy desures in order to pray for the End Times when Yisro’el will be engaged in the Final Holy War against the Kittim (and whom they called themselves Malakhim (‘Angels’) comprised mostly of retirement-age widowers) and had their own ‘Manual of Discipline’ (1QSerekh] whereas the non-celibates (‘spread out into all the camps of Yisro’el’) were married and had THEIR own Manual for the Camps (CD)—so there were at least TWO separate sects within this ‘Messianuc end of days’ community … The War Scroll (much like the Apoc.Yoh. or ‘Book of Revelation’ in the canonical NT) outlines the battle procedure to be taken during the Holy War ‘which shall be accompanied by chanting/singing choirs of Levites ON THE BATTLEFIELD blowing instruments of war including rams’ horns and harps’ (cf Isaiah 30:32 - ‘every blow of YHWH’s right hand upon the heads of his enemies shall be accompanied by Timbrels and harps…’) The fact that these Essenoid Messianic Priestly Zadokite Covenanters (‘Ossim) were still copying out their scrolls at Qumran until after the 1st failed Jewish War v. Rome (66-74 CE) in June of 68 CE when Roman legions set their monastery ablaze means the kind of ‘holy war language’ placed into the mouth of a Greek speaking ho Iesous finally has some ‘historical context’ — which is probably why most of the Dead Sea scrolls were not published by the Catholic Ecole Biblique for nearly 50 years AFTER their rediscovery by Bedouin in December 1946…
