THE BEAT by Allen Parr

Why did Jesus cry out, “My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46)

If He was God, shouldn’t He have known this moment was coming?

The answer is found in both prophecy and substitution.

Jesus was quoting Psalm 22:1, a messianic psalm written centuries earlier. In His agony, He was fulfilling Scripture and pointing to its ultimate fulfillment... Himself.

But more than that, in that moment, He was bearing the full weight of humanity’s sin. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “He became sin for us.” The Father didn’t stop loving the Son, but the Son endured the judgment sin deserves in our place.

Jesus wasn’t confused or caught off guard, He was fully aware and fully surrendered. In that moment, He bore the judgment we deserved so that we would never have to be separated from God for eternity.

Yep and this Psalm ends with God hearing the cry of the afflicted one and not abandoning him!

He said that in that moment while he was shedding his blood for the sins of the world. In that moment he had the world’s sins on him which was the furthest he ever felt from being one with his father as he had only been pure and one with him….but as the son of man and in human form while he bore the sins that was the moment his father was apart from him. But he finished his mission and already won! Praise be to God in Heaven and the name of his Son Jesus Our Lord who bore our sins in that moment so we could have everlasting life in and through him! Amen

As i understand it, God did not forsake him, but for that moment Jesus felt abandoned, alone and without help.

The thing is that the word that's translated "forsaken" means more than that in Hebrew. Contextually, we need to look at not as 'abandonment,' but rather 'not yet collected' - as in the feeling a child may have waiting for their parent to pick them up from school after everyone else has left; the schoolwork is over, the child knows their parent is coming, but still has the weight of loneliness and out of the loving presence of their parent in the meantime - but Not "abandonment!" This context also translates to how David was feeling when he wrote the psalm - his children/kingdom were infighting, some respect had been lost, and wondering what his purpose for remaining in this life was at this point. Messiah's work was done, and just as He did when He raised Lazarus, was simply saying the words for those who were listening - because He knows The Father is Always with Him and Always hears Him! He never left nor forsook Him.

I agree! In John 16:32 He said “I am not alone because the Father is with me.” The Father didn’t abandon Christ at all.

What pulls at my heart strings is the fact that in Matt: 26:53 Jesus states that he could have called upon his father to send 12 legions of angels to save him but the call never came!! How tempting in that moment as a father to send them? Which is equivalent to 72.000 angels that were ready to go! Like they did when Abraham lifted his sword to kill Isaac

"He who became sin for us" I think at this time at the cross Jesus was genuinely abandonned so that we didn't have to be.

Wow, this is powerful, me and my best friend were just talking about this! Every book in the Bible points back to Jesus because before I learned this, I thought Jesus cried out because he thought God abandoned him but the whole time it’s about Jesus🤯

I've heard this before, but what is the evidence that he was not abandoned? Wasn't the sin placed on Him so great that he had to be abandoned and, thus, die? If he took our place, He had to be rejected. This was part of drinking the full cup of wrath. I think being abandoned makes his sacrifice even greater because it should have been me.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
