Chess with Suren

Magnus Carlsen left the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship after being disqualified for a dress code violation for wearing jeans, which are prohibited under FIDE's regulations. After round seven, Carlsen was fined $200 for wearing jeans. When given an ultimatum to change before round nine or face not being paired, he refused. Chief Arbiter Alex Holowczak clarified that Carlsen was not expelled from the tournament and could still play in round 10, but by then, Carlsen had already made his decision.

During an interview, Carlsen commented:
"I said I'll change tomorrow... but they said you have to change now, and it became a matter of principle for me, so here we are! Honestly, I'm too old at this point to care too much. If this is what they want to do, I'll probably head somewhere with nicer weather."

Man is a fashion model AND the chess champion, but he still martyrs himself when asked to swap out of denim. Big baby.

Magnus is a nice man. FIDE should not be so strict.

I’m too old to care at all about this.

I could understand if Magnus looked sloppy or disheveled, but he didn’t. Essentially we’re dealing with “denim discrimination,” aside from the power and control move by FIDE.

Wait - isn't this the guy who's made such a big deal about others following the rules? Guess he only wants folks to follow the rules he thinks are important... IMO, he wanted a way out of a tournament he was losing, and wanted to save face.

@ifchaw

He may be the best, but being best doesn't mean you violate the rules ( dress codes seem too old fashioned but nevertheless)
