It doesn't explain the shimmering Fay experienced, but Sam seems like a lonely, mentally ill, obsessed person trying to interact. Or a mentally ill, obsessed alien trying to be human. He tried so hard to present himself in a non-threatening way, but he just came off as awkward and silly

I remember that in Tolkien's LOTR books, Saruman The White became Saruman of Many Colors after he allied himself with Sauron. Not saying there's a connection, but its the first thing I thought of when Sam called himself "Many colors, Sam".
