Trump and his ass kissing dorks are clueless. Tariffs not only have ruined our relationships with allies, they have put the burden on our consumers who consume which the bulk is the American middle class. Fools!

Free trade would be the goal but thereโ€™s so many systemic problems that need to be addressed first before thatโ€™s the right option. The exploitation of workers and poverty wages in developing countries is the first main issue.

Donโ€™t forget that tariffs have always been used, it is rather that lately the government has sought to discourage the importation of certain goods or certain countryโ€™s goods to swing the balance more towards encouraging homeland production. The design of fabs, the permits, the construction all takes time, more time than the current president has. We all witnessed the turmoil of sourcing masks during Covid simply because the US could not produce such a simple product in sufficient quantities. War between countries can exacerbate this such as China vs Taiwan when the supply of chips would be in jeopardy. Changes in tariffs may not be the only method available but it is one method. Discarding it without a second thought may not be wise even if it appears to be popular.

A tariff simply means you couldn't compete. Your exports would be zero if even your domestic market chose to buy foreign. But instead of investing in R&D to improve your product, you took the lazy way to give yourself an advantage in the local market. In all tariff instances, your own product is certifiable no good shit that is overpriced.

Trump is trying to pay off.... Trump is trying to get other citizens of the USA to pay off the National debt, some of it, so that he can claim all the credit while driving prices up. It's actually quite brilliant if he was being honest about it, but with a great many "Americans" now being of other than European and North West Asian ethnic persuasions, once they pay of the debt he'll kick them too, or PT them into camps or send them to "the farm" just to bring slavery back to the mainstream instead of just in prisons.

Good luck selling anything to countries the USA has put a tariff on. You think Canada will buy cars that have no percentage of Canadian content? Ford has had manufacturing in Ontario Canada for over 100 years since the model T. Free trade made the USA and Canada richer even though the US still messed with Canada over softwood and other things. The US farmer has the most highest government subsidies in the world (not free or fair trade never was). The USA always bullied Canada and got the best of all the deals and Trump wants us to have nothing! FDJT never 51st! The USA is an open prison now anyone could get deported to El Salvador even US citizens. Donald's brown shirts are everywhere.
