Let's look at a basic building block...
The 18th century was:

The worst part about this is I knew the correct answer, but my tired lizard brain saw 18 and went to auto pilot

My glitchy brain saw "18th" and thought "The 1800s?? Thats the 19th century!" And hit 1900...

@Zajuts149

This was one of the concepts I struggled with when learning English. In Norwegian, we rarely speak about the 'centuries'(det attende århundre), we mostly use the 'hundreds' (syttenhundretallet).

In my defense, I am very drunk and still knew it was offset in one direction or the other.

In my mind, the "1700s" is the decade 1700-1709.

@Mailed-Knight

I used to make the mistake of thinking 1800s=18th century too.

@hazel5092

I just always go by this logic 18th century should be 1800, but nothing is ever perfectly and nicely arranged this way, so deduce a hundred points for upsetting my OCD, and end up with 1700 due to the point penalty (Half serious joke)

@TheBrad574

I had to argue a long time with my aunt, a fellow older teacher, about why the correct answer was correct. Think of centuries as boxes/containers that need to be filled up with time. 1st box: 1-100, second box: 101-200, and so on. Edit: Thank you for the poll, Brandon.

Had to remind myself that 2025 is in the 21st century. It's not intuitive but that helps keep things straight for me.

@davidhoffman6980

Consider this: the 1st century was the first hundred years. The first hundred years doesn't start at 100. It starts at year 1 and continues till year 100. The second century is the second hundred years, etc.
