DID YOU KNOW? – A 1980s Fallout Shelter in NORFOLK
In 1982, at the height of Cold War fear, a man in Norfolk built his own nuclear fallout shelter in his garden.
Hidden underground in Taverham, Norfolk, the shelter was designed to protect a family during a nuclear attack, complete with thick concrete walls and survival planning inspired by the Protect and Survive era.
Years later, it was discovered, preserved… and officially Grade II listed for its historical importance.
This wasn’t a government bunker. This wasn’t a military site. This was Cold War fear brought home.
The Cold War wasn’t just missiles and sirens — it was ordinary families preparing for the unthinkable.
