Honestly, even if the singular "they" didn't have historical precedent, language evolves, and we now have a need for gender neutral personal pronouns. I was equally okay with the idea of neopronouns (like xe/xir) a few years back when they were more commonly used, but if someone wants to use the singular they to refer to themself, I'm happy to do that out of basic respect for another human. Calling people what they want to be called isn't rocket science.

From what i've heard, singular 'they' predates singular 'you', so just hit them with the "well, in that case, we can't use 'you' unless we're talking to multiple people, since it's plural too."

Fr. I honestly get misgendered so much that it’s really annoying. Most of the time it’s not out of malice, though, just people having no clue what to call me lol.

@MsSteelphoenix

There are usages of singular they as far back as the 1300s!

I find this so infuriating. I actually AM a spelling/grammar freak. I don't impose it on others, but I use full sentences, punctuation, and paragraphing, even when I'm just texting someone. I double and triple-check my text paragraphs, and make sure I'm using contractions correctly Was I used to using they/them pronouns for people? NO, not at first. Do I do it anyway, YES. Full stop. There is nothing that makes someone feel less seen and more dismissed than being misgendered, and so my mild discomfort at getting used to it is nothing compared to the validation they feel. There is no argument here. Not only is it historically relevant that "you" used to be a plural and it was changed to singular more recently than they/them was, and nobody argued that up and down the block, but all language is fluid and made up anyway. If you can get your point across, that's what matters. The semantics are a standard that each person holds themselves to, not an enforceable standard with accompanying punishment

Some people really are braindead and yet think they can correct others

Roses are red, violets are blue. Singular they is older than singular you.

When people don’t use it for me but use it to describe random strangers 😭

People using the " oH BuT iM uSeD tO it bEiNg SinGuLar " annoy me a lot tbh. It's never just been singular. You use it constantly for people you don't know. " who parked their car here?"

My English teacher for grades 10-12 was obsessed with Shakespeare (she threw him a birthday party in our highschool library every year) but she argued with this girl that said they/them can be used singular. LIKE LADY, YOURE OBSSESED WITH SHAKESPEARE AND THE WRITTEN ENGLISH LANGUAGE BUT NEVER PICKED UP ON YOUR BOY USING THEY/THEM SINGULARLY???????

Sometimes its safest to not tell anyone especially if you don’t trust them not to out you. If you can trust your mom not to tell your dad, then great! Otherwise, you have to make sure to keep yourself safe.

I seriously just don't get why people care so much about what other people want to be called. It takes literally no effort to not be an asshole. "But grammatically..." no, shut the fuck up. 'They' has also been used in the singular form since before goddamn Shakespeare, so if anyone wants to get in a twist over it they'd better go grab a time machine. I'm so tired of this asinine contrarian bullshit. Just do this bare minimum of courtesy for your fellow humans and shut up about it forever.

@Goobergal8705

They/them for a singular person existed before we used "th" as the sound. Rather, it was another symbol known as a "thorne" (Þ)

@pugza1s731

fun fact: singular "they/them" has been around longer than singular "you/you"

This is what borderline infuriates me about living in FL. There are so many things, but this is definitely in the top 5. I’m enby and that is an earth-shattering, god-defying thing to an absurd amount of people I’ve come across 🙄 The amount of times I try to use this argument as to why my pronouns are valid is pointless by now. I always ask “if you found a random wallet without an ID, would you not say “we need to find out whose wallet this is and return it to THEM?” And that’s always met with “that’s not the same thing. You don’t get to CHOOSE your gender.” Pick a side, dude! Either it’s valid because you would use they/them as a filler term for an unknown SINGULAR person OR you can NEVER use they/them for anyone but a crowd! If you get to pick and choose when you use a word and how to use it, so does everyone else
