So, I'm aware that there's quite a few people who like racing games, but aren't really super interested in cars or racing in general. I'm also aware that some of them watch my videos. If you're one of these people, then the following question is directed towards you.

What do you get out of playing racing games?

This is a topic I've always been interested in. For people like me who are obsessed with cars I think the appeal is obvious, but what about the average gamer? What specifically draws you in that you simply can't get with other genres of games? - whether that be the latest releases, or classic titles. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

Also, unrelated, but thanks for the support on my latest video about FWD performance cars (https://youtu.be/qw_Vonzraoc) I didn't expect such a positive response, but I've really enjoyed hearing about your own FWD experiences, and the many great cars you've driven and owned!

Honestly, I just play racing games for the thrill of the speed.

Racing games are thrilling with their sense of speed and danger, and they generally feature enough variability to not play out exactly the same way in consecutive runs. Whether with accurately modelled licensed cars and courses and realistic physics, fantasy cars and courses and unrealistic physics, or somewhere in between, racing games offer a fantasy of combining one's skill with the power and capabilities of a machine to achieve great speeds and navigate courses faster than anyone else. Most of us realistically won't ever get to enter professional races or drive expensive and rare cars, but racing games let us at least have a sense of what it's like to do so and why people who can and do like to do so.

I enjoyed GT mode as a kid and like going fast. I'm not a "car guy" but my dad was tangentially in that world (there's a pic of him in pit lane with Dale Earnhardt Sr before he was a NASCAR racer) and so I like kiiiiinda understand the car parts of these games? Tbh I'm too ADHD to ever mess with settings too much unless I'm having real issues, then I'll usually use a guide to ensure I don't do anything stoopid

I personally get a sense of accomplishment from sim racing that I don’t really get from any other kind of game

I think for me, there feels like a decent overlap between the RPGs I play and the racing games I play since in my favourite racing games, you need to progress by winning races which leads to buying new cars and upgrading, much like playing a RPG where you win battles meaning you get stronger to fight more battle as well as buying upgrades. That and racing games are more action based when compared to most of the RPGs I play so they are nice to play if I want to take a break from RPGs since they can get very long to beat sometimes.

I just love driving around with cars i could never get my hands on irl.. Hearing the engine sounds or tire screeching as i drive across the track, is surprisingly relaxing to me And it just feels very damn satisfying to watch a replay of a clean lap or best time i got on a track.. Tbh on Gran Turismo i have a lot more fun competing against myself on time trial than on a traditional race against opponents.. Mostly because GT's AI just sucks and ends up ramming onto me on every corner, which makes racing very damn frustrating and annoying.. So just me alone on the track, where all i truly have to focus is on being as effective and clean as possible to get the best times is a lot more fun..

I'm going to be honest, I don't really like racing games unless they have something more than driving around and passing dudes. The only two racing games I like are Driver: San Francisco (Interesting plot and unique body swapping mechanic) and Forza Horizon 2 (Offroading to cut corners will always be a blast). As for why I watch your channel even though I don't care for racing games like GT, I think your enthusiam and knowledge about GT makes them good watches, even if the games themselves are not for me.

@UnbornDecay

For me, its not so much racing itself that is fun, but the feeling of driving itself, I love and am sikilled at driving but am hopeless with the details of cars not related to opperaring. So in a racing game, its all about that game feel. Arcady, simulacade, simulation, its all down to how the car feels to drive, the sense of speed and freedom in arcade style racers (Burnout, Daytona etc) or the weight and working around restrictions (Gran Turismo, Forza. etc) its why I also love games that have nothing to do with racing, like Twisted Metal and Crazy Taxi. Atmosphere helps a lot too, so whether I'm blazing down a rainbow at the speed of light, drifting around city streets in a tuned up Lambo, or trying to match my speed to go through a tricky chicane, as long as I feel good and look good, thats what I crave. Preferably with a good soundtrack in my ears Lastly, its also about atmosphere and offering something I cant get elsewhere. I dont think the first two Tokyo Xtreme Racers are that amazing to play, but the battle system is such a rush I dont care because you cant get it anywhere else.

For me,its about exploring the worlds of said games, I personally love The Crew 2 and Forza horizon specifically because of how big they are. Like cruising down highways and listening to the beat. Anothed thing is wacky customization id never do in real life, specifically in Forza. I like turning my very nice, very cool wagon into a 800 HP handling monster with some cool cusfumization. Dedicated racing games however dont interest me as much, probably because they are a lot more limited in what i can do in em

I don't personally enjoy driving much myself and Ive never found competitive professional racing very interesting to watch but I love learning about the design and history of cars. Even as a kid I loved car models, magazines, shows like Top Gear. When I drove a car for the first time I expected to love it. Sadly it's more of a stressful chore than anything else for me. But I love racing games and car docs.

Was genuinely good, does a good job of enlightening the "GT audience" about stuff us Motorsport nerds know. Keep doing the deep dives into obscure topics about "real" racing, your cadence and video style fits real well with it

@bad-temis

Yeah I'm one of those, I don't really care about the mechanical part of a car nor do I care about having a car myself since nowadays that's just financial suicide. However I do enjoy racing games for the collecting part, having diferent cars and being able to customize them is something I really enjoy, which is why midnight club 3 is one of my favorite racing video games. And it's not about racing only, I'm a big fan of the twisted metal games, which don't involve any racing whatsoever. I'm just...attracted to cars in general.

Personally, it’s the opposite - I prefer your real racing content to the GT/gaming content. The gaming stuff is good, but the IRL content is better imo.

@AyushPramanik-m6f

fast car go vroom. No other reason really, it’s just fun. I like need for speed heat, but I’m not interested in cars. I tried to get into GT7 but the economy sucks, the menus on ps4 are slow, and the menu books are boring. The driving was fun though.
