I disagree a bit. Yes, its about serving your country, BUT it can also be to the detriment of other nations. And this is most likely to cause tensions with neighbors, and having a stable and friendly neighborhood (or at least a non-hostile one) is something that should be a priority. Which nationalism would typically ignore. I love my people, my identity but i also respect others as well.
