This can't be normal!? So I'm gonna take my blow torch to work but I'm walking so I wanna take the handle off the gas bottle so it'll fit in a shopping bag; I unscrew it a bit and hear a little hiss when the gas stored in the handle is released, then as soon as I fully unscrew it, it proceeds to discharge the entire contents of the gas bottle!! Almost got frostbite on my hand and then had to run to front door, unlock it, slam it open and throw it out, still blasting frozen propane everywhere!! If there had been a naked flame nearby, I would have been in big trouble!
It isn't the kind of bottles you pierce when you first use it, like you see with camping gas. This has a schrader valve in it. It doesn't say not to remove until empty, and I'm sure Ive swapped heads on bottles before? Bloody dangerous if you ask me. Photo shows bottle after it had settled down, covered in frost do the expanding gas cooling effect.

I had this happen once, out of probably thousands of bottles I've used. Since then, I always unscrew slowly, let the hissing of the gas in the neck/valve stop, and if it doesn't, screw it all the way back on and don't remove until empty.

Schrader valves are pretty good, although they do stick on occasion (as you found out). A lesson learned. You did the right thing. 👍

I hear my dad's voice in my head saying: this is why it's safety first regardless of the tool or if you've used it a thousand times. I've had random failures on equipment before. Valves are typically designed with tolerances in mind, that doesn't mean the output from the factory matches that. Might be 1 in a million or whatever odds, but it happens. Or it could be user error, I've certainly had that error many times myself. Love your work, it's an inspiration. Keep on keeping' on, from New Orleans USA

Yeah, they are valved and self sealing. Take the touch head off and they seal back up. Crazy.

I use a similar torch in kitchens and had an incident more or less the same as you. Scary bit was there were so many gas hobs on. Since then, I always wait until they're empty and change them by the bins just in case!

I’ve had it happen with my gas torch loads of times when I disconnect for transit. If the valve isn’t fully seat correctly I just pop a screw driver in the valve to get to reseat and it closes. If you don’t notice it, it will empty. I check to hear for a hiss every time now. It’s a habit.

I had this happen to me twice in a row and now im paranoid to take them apart until they are empty but it was the worst lottery ever to get one bad one then the replacement to also be bad

Oh, this happened to me recently as well. It was very alarming to say the least. Happy you didn't get frostbite.

Wonder if there was debris in the valve? Glad you are ok 👍

Wow, thanks for the heads up. I'll be careful with that. I've definitely changed heads on mine without this happening, but I guess a shrader valve can stick on a bottle just like they can on a tyre, especially if there's a bit of gunk in there somehow. That is properly scary though. Could you not have simply screwed it back on, as soon as you noticed it hissing?

@jobcacka1330

I have had it happen to old cans before. I was outside at the time fortunately.

I have some experience with these bottles on various heads. Rothenbergwr super fire 2 amongst others and never known them discharge like that. You describe a literal nightmare situatiob that could have been even worse. That must be a faulty bottle. I’ve removed half full from the head many times with no issue.

I've not had one do that, but I have had a few slow leak after removing what was attached (Once the torch, once a portable heater) Both I screwed back in place, and the torch is still on that one, the other didn't hiss, but after a few days the tank was empty. Mapp gas is even worse than straight Propane. More energy in it (hence hotter flame), I'm sure Map-X etc (MAPP replacements) is somewhere inbetween.

I've only had this happen once when I tried to take the adapter off and it wouldn't come off and got stuck in the open position causing that pressured release. Had to put on oven mitts to even hold it to get it back on with my tools😅
