«My Tender and Affectionate Beast», drama

Some facts about the picture:

Director Emil Loteanu has been looking for a story of a new film for more than a year, which would be even more successful than his previous drama «Gypsies are Found Near Heaven» (https://youtu.be/wo8Mi4bFq8g).At last he came across Anton Chekhov's story «A Hunting Accident». Loteanu decided to make it little bit lighter than the original work, but at the same time, from the very first frames, create a feeling of an impending drama ... First draft of the script was called «The Cage».

Searching for the main character was long and painful. The director's assistants traveled to different cities with a task from Loteanu: "Find one that will resemble Tatyana Samoilova, Audrey Hepburn and Lyudmila Savelyeva, but have her own face." Such a girl was found in the choreographic school of Voronezh. The director's assistant followed Galina Belyaeva for several days, until the student noticed the surveillance and asked the reason for such attention. She happily agreed to act in movie and handed over her photo to the director.

The director immediately gave the main male role to Oleg Yankovsky, but the actor asked for time to think. He enjoyed the original story «A Hunting Accident», but did not appreciate the script which was "based on". Yankovsky agreed only because he really wanted to work with the director of the bright film «Gypsies are Found Near Heaven». When Loteanu handed over the finished material to the artistic council, they also noted that there was nothing left of Chekhov, but there were no complaints about the script. The director was only asked to shorten some scenes and re-voice the main female character in the final - she was not supposed to speak with the same naive intonations as at the beginning of the picture. By this time, Loteanu had renamed «The Cage» to «My Tender and Affectionate Beast».

The famous waltz for the film was written by the composer Eugene Doga, who had already worked with the director on the drama «Gypsies are Found Near Heaven». Loteanu was used to shooting with ready-made music, so the whole crew waited for Doga to write the theme for the wedding scene. The composer disappeared into the archives - he was looking for waltzes of the late 19th century in order to write something similar, but everything he found seemed to him "rubbish". He convulsively wrote something, rejected it, wrote again, played examples for the director, and so on.

The wedding dance did not emerge ... But on one of the excerpts, Loteanu said “stop!” and asked to finish this melody. Doga finished the waltz overnight, handed it over to work in the morning, and in the evening the melody was already recorded by the cinematography orchestra. The composer said that he was in shock when the musicians finished playing the melody and began to clap the music stands with bows. He did not even realize that in this way the orchestra applauded him ...

It is still one of the most recognizable melodies of Soviet cinema. The waltz was played at the openings of the 1980 and 2014 Olympics, street musicians and professionals play it, choreographers and athletes put on dance numbers to it. Even US President Ronald Reagan was a fan of the melody - he called it "the waltz of the 20 century."

On September 2 the online premiere of the film will take place on our channel.
