I knew this because I am swedish. Tungsten contains of the swedish words "tung" meaning heavy and "sten" meaning stone. Ironically, Sweden changed the name to Wolfram.

I didn't know that was why it was given the 'W' symbol. I thought it was because a lot of other metals use T + another letter.
