Keir Starmer has stated that Labour will not break their fiscal rules to meet one of their flagship climate pledges. The pledge initially dedicated £28bn per year on climate measures until 2030. It was then watered down to £28bn by the middle of their first term in government. At a speech on Thursday in Bristol, the Labour leader stated ‘If the money is for borrowing … but the fiscal rules don’t allow it, we will borrow less’. The speech gives the strongest indication so far that the pledge will be dropped entirely.
With Labour so far ahead in the polls, they have really no incentive left to promise anything as the county are so sick and tired of the conservatives. This is of course hugely damaging to progressives in the country and, with announcements like these, damaging to the sustainability of the entire planet. The truth is that Starmer’s Labour is no longer the party for progressive change. They would rather stick to their self-imposed financial restrictions than speak for the disenfranchised and enact policies aimed at the wellbeing of the planet.
