Although they played together in live after hours jam sessions, these two leading lights of music had never recorded a whole album together in the studio till finally in 1961. What do you get in pairing in the studio the greatest composer ever & the most important 'pop' singer/ instrument improviser ever? A pure genius album. When it was decided that the material would consist of All Ellington, Duke decided to sit in on piano with Pops All Stars small band. One of my favorite albums ever and one that music ears should treat themselves to listening. A beautiful song written for & about Louis Armstrong especially for this album is Sir Duke's " The Beautiful American". Pops solo on this gem always has me reflecting on Miles Davis statement that in modern music there is nothing that can be played on the trumpet that Pops hasn't already played. Any recording featuring Ellington's mastery on the 88 keys in a small group setting is audio heaven and this album is no exception.
