I think the scariest implication of judging people off appearances that extremely is the flip side: a criminal who looks “respectable” enough might never even be suspected as long as they’re smart enough to keep shit subtle.

Plenty of criminals are very clean, wear suits, and can afford other nice things 😂 hell if a criminal is rich enough they'll get treated better than a normal person when their caught red handed

As a white guy, I’ve NEVER gotten any weird looks or been treated any different because I’m wearing a hoodie or something similar (I’m aware it’s not just hoodies we’re talking about but it’s what I’ve worn in the past) meanwhile I’ve seen or heard about my black and latino friends getting weird looks and being treated differently while they’re wearing the exact same stuff. I definitely think the perception of someone as a criminal has less to do with the clothes, more to do with who’s wearing them, which is even more messed up and dumb

okay, ski masks aside (for obvious reasons) how does one actually "dress like a criminal" i have been wondering this question for years.. people have told me i look suspicious, and i don't even know what that mean

I remember my school banned certain designs, probably because "gangs". Except everything is a gang symbol, and almost every color is a gang color. The only colors that aren't gang colors are weird ones like chartreuse, lavender, magenta, or saffron.

I think most of the debate lies in defining what a criminal dresses like, right? Culturally we just associate the aesthetics of people who commit crimes of desperation with criminality. We're also far less likely to view a white collar criminal the same way we view someone committing crimes of desperation.

"Dressing like a criminal" sounds mostly vague and to me it sounds more like another way to racially profile someone for dressing how they like. The amount of weird looks I've gotten for wearing a sweatshirt hoodie, especially with the hood up in public is crazy, when it's what I feel most comfortable having in breezy weather. That, and I don't like how the wind feels on my head

Even if we take the assumption the criminals as the police imagine them are a real thing, surely criminals are intelligent enough to dress how the people they want to hide amongst dress. Criminals don't want to be spotted, so you are playing into their hand if you picture a kind of person as a criminal. But that's the police for you.

Now, yes you will be treated like a criminal by those that are ignorant. But you shouldnt be treated like that simply because you dress a certain way

What does a criminal dress like?, Bernie Madoff, the Enron guys, Elizabeth Holmes all dressed clean, the Forbes 30 under 30 list seems to be a sundry list of criminals all 'well' dressed. So identification of someone being a criminals is only attached to certain communities and certain casual dress modes

Me and my two goons walk into a bank with our matching ski masks and jumpsuits on, and I just so happen to be holding my lucky crowbar and suddenly everybody wants to point figures like we're the bad guys. I'm just here to make a transaction!

How about: That’s messed up and dumb, but it’s real and we should be mindful of it

Criminals have no uniform, it's all casual wear. That said dressing in a way that is more put together and mature will earn more respect from strangers and thus avoid being treated more poorly.

What does a criminal dress like? Because I know a lot of criminals that work in the United States Whitehouse. If I wear a suit am I dressing like a criminal then?

gotta protect the women and the children who are bad at recognizing complex patterns of behavior so we have to have stereotype for "common-sense" like this quote.

A criminal is different depending on the perspective. A lot of it ends up boiling down the classism
