Strictly, dividends don't reduce equity. Because dividends suppose the existence of a benefit. In legal terms, a company that has a lost cannot distributes dividends to shareholders. In this perspective, dividends per se do not reduce equity.

Both dividends and retained earnings reduces equity. Equity=share capital + RetIned Earnings. Kindly correct if I made a mistake.
