This song will always have a place among my all-time favorites. I’m American. I’ve been listening to Japanese music for years, not really understanding the lyrics. I took one semester of Japanese in college but didn’t think I would learn much of the language after that. When I started listening to more of Nakamura-san’s music, the language began to unfold in front of me. Kanji became recognizable like the faces of friends. Some music has the transcendent quality to make a foreign language familiar. Of course, I don’t understand all the nuances of Japanese which make the music more beautiful and profound, but now it just feels like a language (I’m the foreign one!).
