If art has purpose, I think that at the top of the list is human connection. It’s when the audience of a musician, a painter, a poet, an actor, a sculptor confronts a work and thinks “Yes! I share that thought or experience. I never put it into words, but that’s it!” It’s in that context that I can’t stop thinking about “Emma, Let’s Go”. It was over 56 years ago that my mother and five younger brothers and sisters died in a fire. My youngest sister, KC, was only four years old and I was almost seventeen. Of course, I loved my little sister, but we were over twelve years apart. Your song, which both reflected on the tragic loss of your brother and the bond with your little sister, continues to resonate with me, as I still grieve my own loss all these years later. And I feel the void that should have been filled with a full, adult relationship with my own little sister. Grief is part of our shared humanity. Thank you for your art.
