In under six weeks, Yemeni forces have shot down seven US Reaper drones—three in the past week alone—causing over $200 million in losses, according to The Associated Press. The drones, used for surveillance and attacks, were reportedly targeted by Yemeni air defenses as US military operations in Yemen intensified under President Donald Trump's orders. These strikes followed renewed Yemeni military support for Gaza amid Israel’s war there.
Yemeni forces have been targeting Israeli and US assets, including ships and warplanes, especially after the US formed a Red Sea maritime task force in December 2023 to protect vessels headed to Israeli-controlled areas. A temporary pause in Yemeni attacks followed a January ceasefire in Gaza, but operations resumed after Israel broke the truce.

Amid growing concern over civilian deaths from US strikes, Democratic senators have questioned the Pentagon's conduct, particularly after a recent US attack on Yemen’s Ras Isa fuel port killed over 70 civilians.
