As someone who holds the Silent Hill series close to heartโ€”with Silent Hill 2 being my favourite game of all timeโ€”I gave this a completely fair shot despite my doubts from the trailers. Sadly, it turned out exactly as I fearedโ€ฆ if not worse.

The PC version started off as a disaster. It crashed three times before even hitting the main menu, then crashed two more times after adjusting settings. It only worked once I dropped every graphical setting to low. Even then, Unreal Engine 5 once again reared its ugly head: constant graphical flickering, stutters, and over 20 crashes throughout my playthrough. Completely immersion-breaking.

But the bigger issue is this: it just doesnโ€™t feel like Silent Hill in any way. Thereโ€™s no mention of the townโ€”not even in the notes. The fog is there, sure, but that's where the similarities end. It plays like a generic horror game with clichรฉ scares, predictable design, and no psychological tension. Monsters are forgettable. Exploration is boring. Paths feel linear and copy-pasted. And for a โ€œsurvival horror,โ€ the game throws a ridiculous amount of resources at you. I never once felt in danger.

Combat is better than older Silent Hill titles, but itโ€™s far too action-focused. It forces you into wave-based enemy fights, completely missing the mark of what psychological horror is about. Fear of the unknown becomes nonexistent when youโ€™re repeatedly mowing down the same enemies.

Only the school section vaguely resembled classic Silent Hill level design. No hospital, no apartments. The lack of variety and pacing is shocking.

What disappointed me most though? The musicโ€”or lack thereof. Practically silent the whole game, which completely kills atmosphere. Akira Yamaoka said silence can be powerful, but that only works in contrast. This game just feels empty. Give it SH2โ€™s soundtrack and it wouldโ€™ve been 10x more effective.

The story? Confusing at first, then predictable. I guessed the twist ending as a joke, and it turned out to be exactly right. Itโ€™s a psychological trauma story about a girl killing those close to her, hallucinating them as monsters. Not bad in theory, but poorly executed. And no, Iโ€™m not playing it 4 times just to get the โ€œtrueโ€ ending.

Thereโ€™s just nothing Silent Hill about it. Itโ€™s a generic horror title using the name as a marketing tool. Even ignoring the awful performance, the gameplay, pacing, tone, and design are all completely forgettable. Not scary, not emotional, and not worth your time.

@yutro213

After the Game Awards ends, you shall see the criticisms to Silent Hill f skyrocket farther, as the fanboys will get tired to defend this game.

Appreciate you C. I myself like you play Hitman. And I like you play Silent Hill 2. I was hesitant about this game and now I know why.

@ogwhatever

Another huge W review man. Keep em coming, love reading your thoughts and genuinely it's so refreshing to hear someone else's actual opinion and not just some regurgitated take that every other major creator has on this game

Yeah, I completely understand your points. I did enjoy watching a playthough of this game however ๐Ÿ˜… Another great review for the books. You should consider doing video reviews or starting a separate channel for that. Maybe you've thought this already but I'm just saying, I'd watch

The story is much, much, much more than that. But I don't blame you for not getting there to uncover it, because I totally agree - the gameplay is boring, repetitive, it does not play like survival horror at all and the absence of some great music is noticeable :(

A harsh, but very fair, review. And I largely agree. I am also a long-timer, old fogey Silent Hill fan that bought SH 1-4 all on release day and played (and still play) them often. Despite the dated or clunky combat of those original titles, what keeps me coming back is the deep, engrossing story (and the lore it builds) and all those iconic cutscenes alongside the legendary music from Akira Yamaoka. Those old games include great moments of exploration, intriguing puzzles, likable characters, awesome monster design, and some very memorable psychological horror elements. And this also applies largely to "newer" entries like Shattered Memories (with an interesting "psych assessment" mechanic) and the SH2 Remake (which I really enjoyed even though the combat was overemphasized IMO). But with Silent Hill f, in spite of the impressive Japanese visual stylings, the cool monsters (in look, but not theme, if that makes sense), and the very different but interesting sound design, I found the combat repetitive and tedious, the characters (especially Hinako) are thoroughly unlikable, and the story was flat, cliched, totally un-subtle, ridiculous, and elicited no emotion from me whatsoever. Hinako is immature, selfish, and not a relatable protagonist at all -- and I'm not very motivated to finish my second playthrough, to be honest. I will say, however, that as a STANDALONE horror game, Silent Hill f is decent enough. I didn't encounter any technical issues playing on the standard PS5, and it's an OK product overall. But as a Silent Hill title, it can't hold a candle to the early entries of the series and doesn't add anything to the pedigree. It was pretty disappointing; I expected more.
