V101 SPACE

Here’s one of the final images Voyager 2 ever sent back from Neptune in 1989, a fading blue crescent disappearing into darkness. Still gives me chills. Working on my latest video about Npetune, what shocked me most was how little we actually understand about the planet’s interior… yet how terrifying the best theories already are. Check out the video here https://youtu.be/jxF2pC5oklk?si=P1dXD...

What shocked you most when you watched it? Have a great day! - Rob

@TheRealJules

I was shocked that something WE made had actually flown through space that far! It still boggles my mind that they are both out there, flying through space, still collecting data and sending it home. It’ll be a truly sad day when we lose them.

Voyager 2 is the fastest object humanity has ever made. To escape our solar system's gravity well is no small feat. It's also one of the most stable technological objects, a marvel of engineering.

I remember that picture... It was one of the better ones included in a Manila envelope of 8.5×11 glossies that my grandfather brought home from work (engineer, JPL)... I got to bring them to school for show and tell before they were released to the public. I was in 5th grade.

I agree completely Rob. Looking back at the crescent as flyby missions race past into the inky blackness of space is terrifying. It also makes me realise how fleeting our encounter with planets truly is - one mistake, one mathematical error and all we get would be a pic of nothingness. Remember when the New Horizons team reported problems just before the flyby? I freely admit that I spent a few sleepless nights until it was resolved!

I remember when the first pictures of Neptune came down off the satellite. I worked at a TV station and we could tune in. Awesome.

I remember back in the day when the Voyager probes were launched. The close up of Neptune was amazing.

I was ten when Voyager first sent pictures of Jupiter. It was like science fiction. Amazing.

I don't think Voyager sent such high quality photos.

Someone definitely failed not naming at least one of Neptune’s moons “Nepditty”…
