William Afton is canonically a psychopath, however, he got away with well over 5 murders, I’d imagine he is quite charismatic since to kids (in all fairness he was in a mascot when luring in kids) and probably convincing the police and giving an almost air tight alibi… Psychopaths can mimic emotions, seem almost normal, that’s why it’s so scary

he probably cares enough about his kids where he doesn't want them to die, they are kinda like trophies for him but he doesn't have actual familial love for them, just "that's my property and i don't want it damaged." kinda mentality

Imo william only wanted kids to boost his credibility, in the books he physically and mentally abuse elizabeth, so imo he is just a sad crazy man who fears death. Which is shown in the books

Gonna be honest, William actually being a father is kind of an insult to his character since he’s literally abusive and manipulative..so him being caring is just excusing his actions.. sooo.. he is just pure evil. Though, I guess it is just your AU.
