GT: Garage Talk

As spring starts to warm us up in East Texas, my mind goes back to when ‪@INEOSGrenadier‬ flew me to Aspen Colorado to experience their new off-road-focused SUV and pickup truck in the snow. Their two vehicles are the current Texas Auto Writers Association Off-Road SUV and Truck of Texas, so I was thrilled to get to spend a day in the snow with them.

Powered by a BMW inline-6, employing Italian axels, built in France, this British off-roader is thoroughly a product of Europe. Company founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a fan of the classic Defender, drew the plans for this vehicle and company on a napkin at the Grenadier Pub and we are grateful he did.

Taking an old school approach to wheeling, we have solid axels, recirculating ball steering, and a simple coil over and multi link suspension. The interior features switchgear that would feel at home in the space shuttle. The transfer case is manually actuated, no electronics here. In fact, the engineers actively worked to keep from adding endless sensors to the driveline thus keeping simplicity a focus of execution.

After spending all day in their award-winning SUV, it is refreshing to drive such a simple vehicle in 2025. It’s amazing something like this can even come to be with all the regulations throughout the industry. We are still waiting on our weeklong loaner, but are actively rooting for this startup brand.
