I’d say robbed of its resources and pushed towards a system that serves whoever the west feels “safe” with. The last thing the west wants is for the Arab world to “develop”. Or tbh any other world for that matter.

The west views tech, consumption as progress, but on a long timescale, we are burning through resources very fast and destroying the world. A more basic life can be maintained indefinitely.

The middle east has never seen an Enlightenment movement, where modern classes claim their civil rights and democracy. Instead modernity has been introduced by the military; Kemal ataturk, Nasser, al Assad, Kadaffi. Saddam Hussein was not a military, but belonged to that faction in his party. People who have protested against those modern dictators, have been peasants, clean leaders and imams.

The clan is still the strongest model for social organisation in middle east countries. It goes back, at least, to neoliticum. That is 10 000 years, so they’re definitely backwards.
