Today in animal news:
Fourteen staff members, along with nearly 75 cats and dogs, at Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter in Billings, Montana had to seek medical care after their building filled with smoke after the FBI used the facility incinerator to burn two pounds of seized methamphetamine.
Local authorities said that animal control officers typically use the incinerator to dispose of euthanized animals, but that it can also be used by law enforcement for seized narcotics. The animals have been relocated, and any animal that experienced smoke exposure are being carefully watched under supervision.

The Assistant City Administrator, stated that the cause of the incident stems from smoke being pushed in the wrong direction due to negative pressure The executive director of the shelter, Triniti Halverson, has firmly stated that she was unaware a drug burn was taking place on site. FBI spokesperson, Sandra Barker, told CBS News that the agency routinely uses outside facilities for controlled drug evidence burns.

A restoration tram has also been decontaminating the building but the process is expected to take at least two weeks to a month to complete.The Director of the shelter is asking the public for donations to source supplies, like dog and cat food, blankets, and bottles, during this time.

@JustA-Person

This is the kinda thing a villain would do in a cartoon to show to the people watching how evil they are only to be lauded as “unrealistic” by critics but nope this actually happened in real life

@invisible-q6t

This is insane. Just few weeks ago, I read that an officer overdosed just by opening a bag of drug and the wind blew a bit into her face. She was hospitalized. Of course, you could contaminate the facility and the neighborhood when you vaporized it. So stupid.

Absolutely disgusting, uneducated bunch!!!!This is beyond belief that you will treat animals who are in disrepair and need of a safe home with cruelty. This is not tax payer money at work. It’s as bad as using an elementary school to dispose of narcotics. And on top of that you still want donations when Americans are struggling. Print money and donate that to the animals you harmed.

@KrisDallman

This is absolutely insane!! Why in the world would they do this at an animal facility. These people should be charged for endangering the lives of the workers and animals. Now they want others to pay for their poor judgment to help the animals. The FBI or police should have to pay to help care for these animals for the colossal blunder they made endangering them. Take responsibility!!!!

Was the incinerator owned by the federal government, or owned by a lower-level government who had a deal with the federal government? If not, if the incinerator was privately owned, then the FBI effectuated an uncompensated taking.
