Multiplayer usually keeps on giving and banks on your desire to become the best player, meaning you're more likely to spend more time on them than a single player game. This is especially true nowadays because games are so long I'm way less likely to replay them cause I'm busy and only have so much time to game, so I'd rather have new experiences than old ones again. The only single player games I tend to replay are Sonic and Mario games cause I like seeing how fast I can beat em

@yacchaga

It gets weird when some free to play single player games make more money than some big sales AAA games.

Not just the explanation cited, but multiplayer used to be 'couch PvP/coop'. Current multiplayer games enabled by internet lobbies enable the publisher to move multiple units for 2-4 people rather than just one. You could view this as a sort of 'unit inflation'. Per sale revenue goes up as units moved goes up, but costs for networking infrastructure/anti-cheat also increase. The market moving to DLC and microtransactions has been spurred on by this need for more operating revenue, as just unit sales are less sufficient for margins with the additional behind the scenes cost. It's part of the reason why games moving over a million units in the 90s could get them on greatest hits lists and rereleased with price reductions, but Tomb Raider and Resident Evil 6 moving 6+ million units was a disappointment. It the sole reason, but a factor.

Multiplayer can be profitable over a longer time, but it will cost to produce updated content. Single player is one shot and usually front loaded at release, so it will make less over time as it moves out of launch window. Both have their places and I don't really have any qualms about them. Gaming is for those who enjoy the entertainment, even if it might seem monotonous, or highly repetitive to others.

While multiplayer would make sense, I still say it depends because the amount of return Genshin has made DESTROYS your typical multiplayer game.

Profit for companies. Multiple online. As they would paywall everything.

I'd argue that the max potential is more profitable, but they cost more to develop, require sustained development, and take longer. This means that, when they fail, they fail hard. Meanwhile single player games don't have as much profit, but they are quicker and much less risky.

Its why E-sports has seen such a big push. If you can get a competitive game that'll have a large install base forever, then you'll basically always be able to satisfy investors One of the reasons why FF16 is fascinating is because its being made with talent and money that was made from a massively successful multiplayer game so that they can promote each other in almost a Bungie Halo-esque way. You just don't see that nowadays and that sucks

@PerfectFitGE8

A popular multiplayer can stop a developer from their single player full stop. GTA & Fortnite.

I personally don't play Multiplayer games, so no income from me lol. I would say the most profitable games are full priced yearly releases with "microtransactions". Don't know if the purely multiplayer games like WOW, Fortnight and so on still pull that much money in with cosmetics and monthly subscriptions.

@22RiaKon22

It depends. Good AAA SP game will bring more profit and PR than bad MP cash grab game that shuts down just few months after the release.

I only play single-player games. If aaa industry wants to move in multiplayer future. Count me out I’ll stick to classics or play AA/indie games

Depends on the game

@gameskyjumper1721

really hard to say. How many SP games sold 10+ million copies? How many mp games died in like 2 weeks?

@Dyaburst

Are we including single player gacha like FGO (Fate Grand Order)

@blackslashmail

I disagree, you are leaving out the hugely profitable mobile market with all it's speed ups, bonus stars, extra lives, board clearers, and collectables. Many of which don't need multiplayer to milk you for all your cash
