Cosmic and Body Horror

Three Lines of Old French by Abraham Merritt
All-Story Weekly, August 9, 1919
A cryptic inscription in Old French sets off a chain of eldritch events.
Like the Necronomicon, the three-line inscription carries an occult power that alters reality, similar to how Lovecraftian tomes hold forbidden truths that drive people to madness.

The fact that the inscription is in an ancient form of French parallels how the Necronomicon exists in multiple translations (e.g., Arabic, Latin, Greek), making its knowledge more accessible yet still dangerous.

The inscription, when read aloud, appears to trigger an ominous manifestation, much like how Lovecraft’s texts can summon or draw the attention of eldritch entities.

Just as the Necronomicon is rumored to be written by the "Mad Arab" Abdul Alhazred, Merritt’s inscription hints at an unknown, malevolent past, with its true origins shrouded in mystery.

The way the Inscription manipulate reality suggests a connection to Yog-Sothoth, a being often associated with knowledge that bridges dimensions and can be accessed through esoteric texts.
