Should movie stars share their political views on social media?

Here my thoughts in the video pinned first comment.

They can say whatever they want, but there also may be consequences and studios are not unreasonable for not wanting to attach themselves to controversial ideas.

Freedom of speech but not freedom from consequence. That goes for the rich and the poor.

I think the more interesting conversation should be why anyone would put any stock into what they say. That’s not a slam, but I’m just not looking to someone who’s paid to be someone else for a living for any kind of political advice or commentary, not to say that they shouldn’t be able to say whatever they want. They can say whatever they want whenever they want to say it but we should measure why so many of us actually think that what they have to say is actually important. I don’t know. That’s just my two cents.

Personally, I feel the bigger problem is how studios react. Disney fired Gina Corano for expressing one opinion but not Rachel Zegler for lashing out about the other. WB recast Johnny Depp in Fantastic Beasts but not Amber Heard in Aquaman. The inconsistency is really what I find more frustrating.

My philosophy for when anyone speaks their mind is this idea: it is not enough to be right, how you say it matters too. You can have beliefs and say what you believe, but you have to speak it with respect, kindness, humility, and charity. This is true of everyone, and saying that celebrities should be silent because they are celebrities is a double standard in itself. Celebrities must be held to the same standards as the rest of us. This works both ways. If we are going to hold our celebrities to a certain standard, we need to hold ourselves to the same standard. If I believe something is not OK for a celebrity to do, then I should not hold it as something that is OK for me to do. The rules should not and cannot change because of someone's status. We all must be held to the same standard of conduct. If you don't do that, then you very quickly land into the territory of injustices becoming common and being justified because "so and so has such and such status and so the rules are different for them." And yes, everyone must equally face the just consequences for their actions.

They have lots of power and it can be used for good but if they want to use that power they should educate themselves very well in said topic so that they can make the right decision to help as many people as possible

They have the right to say what they want as stated by the 1st amendment. However, that won't protect them from the consequences if they go too far with that speech.

Obviously B is the most sensible and "right" answer, but part of me thinks they should just stay out of these issues in the public for 2 reasons: 1. Even though they are still people, to the public they are entertainment and a way to not think about those sort of real world things. It can take away one's enjoyment if they can't separate the face giving a performance from a face they saw saying something that offended their most passionate beliefs. Not everyone is capable of separating the art from the artist, so if they truly care about box office numbers... We should not even know so much about their personal lives anyway like Old School Hollywood (it made them more mysterious and interesting), but social media has ruined that. 2. It can come off as unbearably smug, condescending, and elitist. Like they're lecturing us plebs and telling us what issues we should care about and how we should feel about them because they're... rich and on our TV screens? And it's become so annoying and kind of egregious that both sides of the aisle are using celebrities so much to sway public opinion.

They have a right to say whatever they want however they want, but it's probably smartest to just keep their opinions to themselves. At the end of the day, it's their own personal decision.

Free of speech, but also remain respectful as they express their opinions.

Freedom of speech does not equal freedom from judgement. You're free to say what you like but with that everyone else is free to feel how they like about what you say.

As long you are not hurting anyone you are free to say whatever you want. It doesnt matter if you are star or just normal person. Thats my opinion

I think everyone should be respectful, but it's more important that no one is restricted from free speech. Lately, we're starting to see audiences holding Hollywood opinions in lesser regard and even movies not having the same traction solely based on actors. Studios would be wise in refraining from sharing political/social opinions and extending that same rule to their employees.

Absolutely, they have a platform where their voice would be amplified and speak for those that don’t have access to one or whose voice can’t be heard. However it can come at a cost and off putting to many . Like Sean Penn comes off as smug and alienating. Same with Jon Voight/ Mel Gibson. But you can have those like George Clooney or Kelsey Grammer that come off as respectable

Who can say whatever you want, and people and companies can react however they want. Free speech isnt free from consequences.

I dont care what opinions they give. Its not going to change how I see them as actors in the slightest. A good actor is a good actor.

I think they can say what they want, but they ought to be cautious about how they say it because the size of their platforms means if they say it in a less than gracious or less than helpful way, it can be quite consequential
