Not Just Bikes

This video was interesting. It was less negative than most of the videos of this style, but it was still very honest about the current state of San Francisco.

I lived in the Bay Area for several years, but that was way back in '98 and '99. The last time I was there was on a business trip in 2018, and it was already drastically different. For the most part it's still a pretty good city (by North American standards), but only if you can afford to live there.

Incidentally, if you'd like to see some unfiltered views of San Francisco, Twitch streamer "Bike Curious" does livestream bike rides every Sunday. They're great! www.twitch.tv/bikecurious

I was there in 1999 and again about 15 years later. There was a huge difference. Moist of the buildings were identical, but it was a hell of a lot louder with heavy traffic, lots of people living in vehicles and 100% of pedestrians on their cell phones. Taking a 7 am road bike ride to Hawke Hill from downtown (time zone changes, woo!) across the Golden Gate Bridge was still sublime.

San fran was the most european city we saw in the states. And then NYC was surprisingly walkable.

As someone whose lived in SF ten years, and doesn’t earn 100+k, I would say the city works significantly better than most American cities. But most everything in the city does not do what it is designed to do very well. Which I think is a case study in favor of decentralized community planning, instead of the centralization and corruption that is characteristic in all of America (including SF), most (not all) of Europe, and now much of the world.

Funny how he names Amsterdam as one of the most beautiful cities in the world while I wouldn't even say it's one of the most beautiful cities in the Netherlands. 😂

I'm not going to watch. I just hope this isn't another wealthy creator creating content by filming homeless people.
