It's terrible to hear about the tragic death of young Ashley. We cosplay to express ourselves, but we also cosplay because it's a part of our geek culture to love the conventional things that we love.
We're expressing our love for the character, even if that character isn't of our color. However, there are still people who seem to feel like they need to gatekeep characters they don't own and tell us black nerds that we can't cosplay as those characters. Is that fair? No.
Words are more hurtful and effective than a physical attack. To all my black nerds and cosplayers out there, continue to do your thing, continue to express your love for characters that you love no matter the color, but more importantly, know that you are loved.
