As many theorised, including me, ep 7 revealed that Caine is indeed evil which makes sense considering I'm pretty sure Caine murdered Abel in the bible. Anyway. He's desperate for them to appreciate him and when they do notice him or pretend to, he gets wide eyed and emotional. I think it's genuine. Which makes my think that his evil ways (giving them adventures, trying to gaslight them into thinking his adventures are good, twisting their minds to stay, whatever...) is out of insecurity. Like, he clearly wants to be appreciated and he crashes out when he questions his worth.
