When I saw the concept art I was confused af, how did they not capture a single one of the features that identify where she’s supposed to be from? 3D modeling team doesn’t know wtf they’re doing with the female characters at all. They all have the same face and proportions

I think they create better black men characters because it's easier for them to see masculinity comes in a variety of forms and does not have to fit their ideals for beauty, but for women femininity and beauty are very confined to their ideals.

I'm Southeast Asian and when I saw her I assumed she was like from Indonesia or Thailand or something. I know Malagasy people are a bit Austronesian but she should look more like the concept art, maybe they will fix up her design to fit the art they made

I didn't watch the announcement so I didn't know who this was supposed to be. This is just Christie with some MMA gloves. You could've told me this was a new Christie redesign and I wouldn't have questioned it for a second.

Ah yes, the artistic tradition that gave us heartbreakingly detailed designs for mecha, textiles, street scene establishing shots and the refractions of light coming off a human iris, but still makes me have to defensively say shit like "He's a really good character, I know the lips are fucked up, please give the show a chance anyway!"

Between this and canon weights in Street Fighter, FG developers aren't beating the "never interacted with a woman" allegations.

Tekken just has a bad trackrecord with making the same woman 40 times in general. They got a very specific type of girl that they like and they make sure all the female characters are at least adjacent to that. They can afford to do better.

Brother, they expect us to believe Elena is Kenyan, while she acts and plays like she's from Brazil. Nice of them to try and include African characters but asking them to actually design characters where their culture is more than a costume or set dressing is uniquely impossible for African characters only.

After seeing how dirty Naomi Osaka was done by Nissin for one of their commercials, saying that the changes made here were on purpose wouldn't even be that much of a stretch

Fun fact, the language of Madagascar, Malagasy, is actually related to the some of the languages of South East Asia like Malay and Tagalog (spoken in the Phillipines), the indigenous languages of Taiwan, and the languages of Pacific Islander people like Hawaiian and Maori. Linguistic evidence points to Malagasy being most similar to the languages of the island of Borneo in particular, so the theory is that Madagascar was first settled by Austronesian sailors from Borneo who sailed far South West to Madagascar. Later on Bantu people from East Africa migrated to the island and mixed with the Austronesian people already living there. Madagascar has such a unique and interesting history.

This is why I look at any Black person sideways who takes anime seriously or respects it. The artists and creators tell and show you over and over again that they don't give a shit about us or diversity and inclusion. They remind us that we are not the target audience and won't cater to our needs without business pressure. And yet it's us who blindly watch their content, rave about it online, and attend their conventions. Beautiful art form but it's very linear. Historically, you're White, Asian, or Black. And if you're Black? It's disrespectful one way or another (voice artist, character portrayal/storyline, appearance, etc...).

It's a whole essay to explain but it basically comes down to Japanese nationalism and the media conglomerates that enforce strict pro japanese codes. This is why you will almost never see a Japanese celeb that can speak English doing so in an "official" setting. They are not allowed to, it can hurt their contracts or even get them black marked.

They know how to draw black men (eddy, Leroy, raven, Bruce, tiger) and they got it right with master raven, but they did not cook with this one. She looks very similar to Elena from street fighter, who could draw identical criticism.

For what I gathered, Capcom really worked hard with black employees and consultants for Kimberly, and they did a great job. Unfortunately it seems to be an exception more than a rule for these types of game. We have a lot of different ethnicities in my studio and they share a lot of ressources. That's why diversity matters even inside the industry.

I immediately looked up indigenous people of madagascar and learned that Madagascar is home the most blasian people. Where austronesians and bantu people mixed.

This Is one of the reasons I dont play Tekken. Once you costumize outfit AND hairstyle you pretty much cannot tell what female character are you looking at with very few excepcions

I'm mostly disappointed in how the design team can lock in and make the majority of the male characters have diverse facial structures, head shape, pores on their skin, etc. But all of the women look like porcelain dolls with their anime eyes and narrow noses. Even Nina Anna and Jun, who are supposed to look older, but the devs found a way to write lore, giving a scientific or mystical excuse for them to still look 27-30 ish.

Signified B Sides
I dont mind her being lighter skinned but I know they can do a bit better for her not to look like a tan Asian woman... cmon now.
Went and looked up Madagascar Women (respectfully) still feel like the in game model is far off. The concept art maybe is a bit too west African but the in game model is basically the same face all the women have. Anna looks closer to a black woman in the face than this girl. It's mostly the nose.
Japanese artists have a long history of acting like they dont know how to draw black people but then you see clear signs in plwnty of animes that many of them do (hence Kimberly in sf6) they just dont want to.
