I've seen a lot of comments about Laios possibly being on the autism spectrum. Do you think he is?

Ryuko is a writer that thrives for subtext, so much of her characterization is done in subtext. The only relationship that's put into words in our main cast is chillchuck's relations to everyone else, which is done to contrast his closed off personality. Ryuko Kui would write an autistic man, without ever describing him as such, nor even needing to. (She's also made so much side content outside of the story, wherein Laios gets to demonstrate every autistic trait under the sun)

@Typisk

Looking at the dsm5, bro fits several criteria perfectly, for example: “Deficits in social-emotional reciprocity, ranging, for example, from abnormal social approach and failure of normal back-and-forth conversation; to reduced sharing of interests, emotions, or affect; to failure to initiate or respond to social interactions.” “Deficits in developing, maintaining, and understanding relationships, ranging, for example, from difficulties adjusting behavior to suit various social contexts; to difficulties in sharing imaginative play or in making friends; to absence of interest in peers.” “Highly restricted, fixated interests that are abnormal in intensity or focus (e.g., strong attachment to or preoccupation with unusual objects, excessively circumscribed or perseverative interests).” In addition I’ve seen a wide range of autistic people identify themselves with him. I have no clue if he was intentionally written with autism in mind, but dismissing people who headcanon him as autistic is just weird.

It's basically spelled out for us when he and Shuro argue in episode 17 lol

As an Autistic person myself, oh, definitely Laios is Autistic!! He has many obvious Autistic traits, like having a special interest in monsters to him stimming in this recent episode to him struggling to communicate with Allistic (not Autistic) people like missing Neurotypical/Allistic social cues. He is a super obvious Autistic character, and that is why that whole fight with Toshiro and Laios hit so many Autistic people hard emotionally. Because we have been in exactly Laios's position many times, and it highlights our lived realities of what us Autistic people experience regarding other people's ableist perceptions of Autistic people. So yeah, Laios is also Autistic. I would also say Falin is Autistic too! So yeah, there are a lot of Autistic characters in this anime.

If he wasn't then he'd be socially acceptable and admired by other people like kabru. So far people that know him usually tend to remember him as an oddball. He even got bullied in his younger days during his time in military school because he didn't fit in with his peers.

@plank2490

He convinced me that he is when he started barking like a dog last episode lmao

@rattled6732

He is the best representation of Autism I’ve ever seen. He is basically a checklist for all the symptoms but that isn’t his entire personality

Man has a passion for monster food and can perfectly emulate the sound of a dog barking. He is definitely on the spectrum

Ryoko kui really needs to answer that because many of the things he does and say are just so relatable. How many of y’all think she has some form of autism or just knows someone like that

The conversation between Laois and Shuro in episode 17 (I think) is a something I've experienced myself as an autistic person, although I didn't slap the other person about it. It was very relatable and poignant to me because I felt his frustration like it were my own. Sometimes it's way nicer to actually explain to someone that their behavior annoys you than just hoping that they get it on their own.

@azurerandomness

it's like so unbelievably obvious that he is, so rare to see this kind of accuracy for autism

If it wasn't for his very high charisma no one would even dare journey back and save his sister, and if the situation was reversed Falin would die trying to save him sneaking in the dungeon alone cause no one would really care to do so.
