Calvin Coolidge made his name as Governor of Massachusetts in his handling of the Boston Police Strike of 1919. Among Jazz Age presidents, he was lucky because he neither had the scandals of his predecessor Harding nor did he become the fall guy for the Depression like his successor Hoover. He had made his legal career in Northampton, MA. Among other possible places, Coolidge Corner in Brookline, MA is named after him. He was one of several Massachusetts governors who either became president or ran for the office. An apocryphal story was that someone approached Silent Cal and told him that he bet his friend that he could get the president to say more than two words. He said: "You lose."

One of my favourite presidents; calm, professional, stoic, took the job seriously, and never went against the Constitution (unlike practically every single president after him). As someone that generally despises the majority of politicians, he's one of the very few I genuinely respect.

The fact that people still worship the night watchman state is weird. Look at this comment section

Progressive historians discovered that Hoover was not a do-nothing President, so they blamed the Great Depression on Coolidge, because all good things come from The State. Quiz: Does that attitude remind you of something? Hint, look to Italy at the time.

Premodernist
100 years ago today Calvin Coolidge became U.S. president unexpectedly after the death of President Harding. Coolidge received the news while vacationing on his family's farm in rural Vermont and his father, a justice of the peace, administered the oath of office at 2:47 am on August 3, 1923.
