Nintendo just killed Mario Kart World online.

Will they walk back this horrendous update and make positive changes to online in the future?

@multigamer5168

They will revert, but in the most roundabout Nintendo way possible

@VeloxusGaming

They will revert it for Mario Kart World Deluxe on the Switch 3.

@GameDragon2k

Don't need to revert it necessarily, just add a classic 3-lap mode.

"Introducing our new dlc, classic mode! For a modest $20 you can play calssic 3 lap races worldwide just like the Mario Kart's you're used to!"

I'm 99% certain Nintendo just said "oh that's a bug. Here's the fix" with no other thoughts.

The thing is, "everyone picks random all the time" is clearly not how things are supposed to work. We all know it was just a workaround that people found in order to get 3-lap tracks consistently. The problem is that they "fixed" this workaround without fixing the underlying issue. As to whether they have any intention of addressing that underlying issue... who knows?

Incoming update: We heard your complaints about the change to selecting Random. We have removed the Random button entirely so it cannot distress players anymore.

They probably will at some point, it's just a question of how long they will drag their feet to do so. My money is that this is how it's gonna be for the next couple months when they announce a new online mode that's just what we wanted to play all along. I doubt they're gonna do a full revert to the pick random meta, which would be the fastest solution to this.

I feel like they have no choice, they'll soon see how much the playerbase dropped in online

I think the ACTUAL best solution is to guarantee that a 3-lap course is always at least one of the three options that you can choose from. They already show up pretty frequently, so just increase those odds to 100% and people will be happy. That way they don't have to split us into different matchmaking groups. Does anyone actually want to have to press random every time? It feels cleaner if you can just choose the 3-lap option that is given if that's the play style you prefer.

@plompcore

I wonder if Japanese MK players are currently voicing their concerns to Nintendo, I figure they'd hear from them first

@batmanbud2

They've fixed notorious issues in the past. They don't do it consistently, but it's still possible.

i really hope so, but i'm not keeping my hopes up

Tbh, I think they’ll eventually revert it or make a new mode that separates intermissions from traditional. Either that, or they can meet us in the middle, by having each race alternate between intermission and 3-lap. It allows Nintendo to shove intermissions down our throat while also letting is enjoy the 3-lap races. I personally enjoy the intermissions a fair bit, because they just feel so different and fresh to me. I don’t mind them too much! But I agree that the regular tracks are FAR superior.

@meta13gaming

Nintendo wants us to play their games THEIR way, this ain’t no Burger King where you can “Have it Your Way!”

As a long time Nintendo fan, i knew this update was coming the moment everyone started picking random in lobbies.

@jpVari

It amazes me how much of this you can read without finding out what happened

I’m speaking with no online experience myself, but if Nintendo is receiving this much backlash on day one of this update, then they can’t keep it this way without having to bear the consequences.

@52flyingbicycles

Nintendo’s design philosophy has always been that they create an experience for you and if you don’t like it you can play another game.

What I hope is that they're doing this specific type of petty scheme (I forgot what it's called but it's taught in Social Psychology), where they purposely make a change that they know no one is going to like, but will only fix that change if enough people speak up about it. However, their plan was to change it back all along, specifically doing it with this incredibly manipulative phrase: "We listened to your critiques. We're giving you what you want," when in fact they knew this is what everyone has wanted this entire time.
