It is a workout for your brain, pushes you to think outside of your OWN box, you learn new skills, and can potentially learn you might have an unexpected knack for a genre you never would have thought of. I have always written scifi, horror, and dark stuff, but I came across some open calls for different types of romance, so I thought, "why not?" Now one of those stories is getting published in an anthology of meet-cute romance short stories in February 😂 The other 2 are still waiting for publisher responses, as their open calls ended more recently, but 🤞I even had to create my first author page (a pen name just for romance) on Amazon and other places, with this being my first publication in a book instead of magazine or online publicatio

Yes, in terms of a completed book, because as in music, sometimes a work will cross over to several genres.

Clive Barker was originally a romance novelist. He only agreed to do Hellraiser for the money. Kevin Smith was known for Mallrats. He decided to try a romance. It flopped. The lesson to be learned here is, if you haven’t found your lane, try everything until you do. But once you find your lane, stay there. AND ABOVE ALL, DON’T BE OBSTINATE! GIVE THEM WHAT THEY WANT!

Testing different genres helps stimulate the brain, allows you to express your emotions in different ways, helps writers solve problems better, enhances writers’ planning skills, and etc.

Maybe at first, but I think once you find your groove, perhaps you should stay consistent in that genre 🤔

I disagree. An author should build an audience in one genre, before trying another.
