As an autistic person this show always made me so uncomfortable. It just feels like another case of turning neurodivergent people into entertainment for a neurotypical audience—almost like a nature show for them to watch us and go “oh look, the autistic person thinks it’s people!”. I shudder every time someone calls someone on this show “cute” or “wholesome” or whatever infantilizing term they’ve come up with to simplify our existence and make it more comfortable and palatable for them. Can’t wait to see what you have to say! ❤

I hope this includes a side quest into some of the 'autism moms' on the show because yikes

Very eager to watch this. I feel like there’s a lot to critique (esp with the off-screen behavior of some of the cast members’ parents) but I do think it gives representation where it was lacking and shows a wide range of experiences with autism. I found it an enjoyable watch and I love the cast members (esp. my leftist king James). Will preface that by saying I am not on the spectrum myself but am close with people who are. I’ll look forward to hearing your deep dive!

I loved this show. I’m autistic too. But the parents were not good vibes and some scenes concerned me because they felt infantilizing or just…yknow. Feet centered.

I think love on the spectrum is a bad idea in general I mean you’re oversimplifying the experience of an entire group of people and acting like a couple people represent everybody when we are already over stereotyped and looked at reductively.

Ohhh i'm excited but also scared. I really enjoyed Love On The Spectrum as an autistic person. But hearing about the class disparities, tanner's mom, and the weird feet shit makes me feel so icky about it.

Looking forward to this. Orion Kelly covered the first couple of seasons (Australia, think he also covered the first US season). Big part of his rants was the infantilisation and how for most of the families spoke for their autistic family member when it was the at home sound bites. The other one is that for Love on the Spectrum they got it classified as a documentary, therefore none of the participants get paid. If it was classified as reality TV then they would.
