Isn’t that why people usually add a textless version with their entries? So the host can change the typography if need be?

I completely agree! Honestly? Art doesn't matter at all. I choose from texting. How visible is the text as a thumbnail? Is the text integrated with the characters well? Of course, you wouldn't like, what the text to be covering up an important thing you're supposed to be looking at (like a character's face, for example).

thumbnails have to communicate what the video is about within just a few seconds. pretty art is nice, but seeing the title is so much better.

I wonder the issue, I tend to make cool thumbnails with map calls and not even the text being large is enough It's the worst working almost 2 years on a storyboard/designs for no one to see or apply But thanks for the tip, I wonder if the algorithm is truly this horrendous or if it's something I'm doing srong

I agree somewhat. I don't think I'd deprive the audience of better thumbnail art, just for text though. If a host makes it super important, then of course follow their rules, but I don't think it's the most important if having the characters relate back to the actual projects idea is also a requirement. For phones: the thumbnail is still going to be small and text even smaller. So making pretty text thats still going to be small is sometimes a waste. And blocked by the time marker on the corner for a brief moment until the preview plays is a thing too. I wouldn't want text taking away from beautiful art, when there is a title that tells you the name of the project right there. That is much bigger than the thumbnail too.

honestly another tip, PUT THE TEXT BEFORE U GO ALL OUT WITH ART!!! DO CONCEPT THUMBNAILS!!! ASK FOR CRIT!!! Sketching it out in the final is fine but the text goes first!!! sometimes it's really hard to read the thumbnails :,)

Here's a tip for anyone making MAP thumbnails, especially when entering contests - or at least what I think about as a host.
Having pretty art is really nice, and important, but text is the MOST important. There have been plenty of times when I've decided against using a beautiful piece of art because the text is too small or not integrated very well into the draw. YouTube video previews are very small! It's important to be able to read that text, and that it looks nice instead of just the basic text tool slapped on top. It's something I notice a lot in thumbnail contests.
Take a look at a bunch of MAP thumbnails if you want; you'll notice how much clear and striking text placement there is.
