The Massacre of Glencoe, which occurred on February 13, 1692, in the Scottish Highlands, was a brutal attack on the MacDonald clan by government forces. The massacre was part of a broader effort by the British government to subdue the Highland clans, many of whom had supported the deposed King James II in the Jacobite uprisings. The MacDonalds of Glencoe had been slow to swear allegiance to the new monarchs, William III and Mary II, leading to the issuance of orders to "extirpate" the clan. Under the pretense of seeking shelter, soldiers from the Campbell clan, who had been hosted by the MacDonalds for nearly two weeks, turned on their hosts in a surprise night attack. The massacre resulted in the death of around 38 MacDonald men, women, and children, with many more perishing from exposure after fleeing into the harsh winter landscape. The event is remembered as a dark chapter in Scottish history, symbolizing the treachery and brutality of the era.
