Near the food court, Sarah and Emily had cornered a Career supply pile. They’d watched from the shadows for hours, waiting for their moment. Sarah, ever the planner, pointed to the left entrance. “You grab the bags, I’ll cover you. We run if they spot us. Got it?”
Emily nodded. “Got it.”
They moved fast — too fast. Ruby saw them first. “Thieves!” she shouted, spear raised. Chaos erupted. Hazel fired an arrow that missed by inches. Sarah threw her spear, grazing Hazel’s shoulder. Emily grabbed a backpack and dove behind a fountain.
Sarah ran forward, blocking Ruby’s strike with a metal tray. The sound clanged through the atrium. “You don’t scare me,” she spat. “You’re just kids with fancy toys!” Ruby snarled and went for another hit, but then Ali saw it. The way Sarah’s spear tip gleamed, perfectly aimed for Ruby’s heart. Without thinking, Ali shoved Ruby aside. The spear buried itself in her chest.
Ruby turned, eyes wide. “Ali—?”
Ali gasped, blood soaking her shirt. “I told you… I’d always… have your back.”
Her legs buckled. Ruby caught her before she hit the floor. BOOM. The cannon fired before Ruby could even scream. Across the courtyard, Sarah froze — her own weapon still raised. She hadn’t meant to— But Hazel’s arrow found her. BOOM.
Emily screamed as her best friend’s body hit the floor. She ran to her, shaking, but Sarah was gone — just another face for the sky tonight. Ruby stood there in shock, staring down at Ali’s lifeless form. All the insults, the mocking laughter, the times she brushed off Ali’s kindness — it all crashed into her at once. Ali hadn’t been pretending. She’d actually cared. Ruby’s hands trembled as she brushed the hair from Ali’s face. “You idiot,” she whispered, voice cracking. “You were never supposed to save me.” Hazel rested a hand on Ruby’s shoulder, but Ruby didn’t move. The fire in her eyes had gone cold. River, watching from the side, felt something twist in her chest. This was what kindness got you in this arena, dead.
Meanwhile with Madi and Kaylee, they were hungry, so hungry. They hadn’t seen food since the bloodbath and every time they saw food since then, it was poisonous. They couldn’t go to the food court, not near the careers. They were on high alert when they heard a noise, definitely not human. Maybe, slithering? That’s when they saw it….. a cord? No not a cord. A snake.
The Kaylee immediately attacked. Madi stood there holding her head and…..crying. That’s weird, Madi never cries. The snake moved so fast that Kaylee couldn’t catch it when it bit Madi. BOOM. All of a sudden, Kaylee’s memories flooded her brain.
Flashback: Kaylee watched as Madi did her interview, she looked like she was struggling to get the crowd’s attention. Once Madi left the stage she was taken away by a gamemaker and when she came back she seemed…..different. Kaylee tried to talk to her but Madi just smiled and stared at the distance. Kaylee grabbed her hand and ran in the direction of the game maker. “What did you do to her!” She screamed.
“I’m helping her,” the game maker replied, “the crowd didn’t like your ‘opposite twins’ thing you’ve got going on, so I fixed her!”
“Fixed her?!” Kaylee yelled, “you turned her into a mutt! Look at her!” Madi was standing, smiling, and staring out the window.
“We got a code yellow” and all of a sudden Kaylee was injected with something, and everything went black… :End of flashback
Kaylee hugged Madi one last time and watched the “mall vine” slither away and later heard a girl scream…
