The Slate Dragon
I watched the Minecraft movie yesterday! My thoughts (minor spoilers but nothing big):
-I went into it thinking the plot was going to be hopelessly bad. It wasn't, actually. Sure, it's really not gonna win any awards, but it was decently coherent at least.
-The characters were the same way. People have said they were boring and forgettable, but I can remember each one's name and what they did. The male protagonists going from rivals to best friends was funny. Again, people have said....things about what the writers were trying to make their relationship out to be, but the movie fortunately says nothing about that and only portrays them as bros.
-The villain, surprisingly, gets more on-screen backstory than most of the human characters (except for Steve). Which isn't necessarily bad, it's just interesting.
-There are TONS of little references and cool things hidden in the background of the scenes, including a nice little tribute. For those of you who don't know the tragic story, a really famous gaming YouTuber named Alex, called Technoblade online, died of cancer a few years ago. His player avatar was a pig decked out in a crown and a robe, and in honor of him, the animators added a crown to one of the pigs walking through the village scene. I've never watched any of his videos, but he seems to have had a huge impact on the Minecraft community, and I think it was sweet that they immortalized him and his work that way.
-The visual effects were great. When the trailers came out, some had complaints that it was poorly green screened, but I didn't see any of that in the movie (maybe I'm just blind to that lol). The animals were decently cute, and the zombies and skeletons were nothing short of terrifying (in a weirdly funny way). My favorites were the wolf and the chicken.
-There are a couple silly little songs Steve sings, which would be out of place in any other movie, but this one doesn't take itself seriously, so they're just another piece of the bizarre atmosphere.
All in all? It was an enjoyable movie which I feel catered exactly to its target audience--like my teenaged brother and his friend, laughing at all the silly memes. I understand the hate directed toward it from a writing and "brain rot" point of view, but it's a hilarious little ride that I'd watch again if I was looking for a movie on a plane or something.
I'm gonna go play Minecraft and make a lava-fueled chicken cooker or something now.
