Are you a Python programmer with interest in getting into game development, but you have no idea where to start or how your expertise can help you gain some experience? Are you panicking at the thought of having to learn yet another language just to get a start? Nah. I'm not letting you go out like that. I'm going to tell you what to do.

1. Grab your phone and let your imagination take control.
2. Think of a good idea for an interesting story and record that.
3. Start a new recording and flesh out the major plot points of that story. The more adult it is, the better.
4. Install or open Chrome and go here: www.renpy.org/doc/html/index.html

Copy and paste that. If you don't trust links, Google: Ren'Py documentation. The official documentation should be the first result.

5. Make that a progressive web app (PWA) by clicking the menu, click "Save and share," and click "Create shortcut."
6. Name it in a way that works for you, check the box for "Open as new window," and unpin it from the taskbar unless you just want it there.

If you have the Windows bug that affects Chrome, and you can't open Chrome shortcuts after you close those windows, you'll have to take ownership in place of the default system Admin under Properties > Security. There are more steps, but that's for a separate post. Anyway, you're going to be referring to that resource a bit, so make it readily accessible to yourself. No account is required.

While listening to your notes and getting hyped up, you're going to follow a few more steps.

7. Read this page, then download the green install kit: www.renpy.org/latest.html

Don't worry! I got you if you still don't trust links! You can Google "install Ren'Py," and it should be the first result. That's the official. Don't go anywhere else for it. If auto-detect doesn't highlight which kit you need, either get the .exe one, OR what you believe is most appropriate for your machine and comfort levels.

8. Install that and launch the application.
9. Learn about the genre and structure by watching this video: https://youtu.be/7dfGgJRAEZY?si=LJ3kR...

It's not the shortest video, but it's not going to cost you an hour of your life. It's just important foundational things you need to know before you start rolling our your story. If you start without knowing that, you're only going to give yourself a big headache and a boring game.

10. Watch this video to get an understanding of how to actually script the story of your game: https://youtu.be/C3Ldd-5PKCw?si=exs5y...
11. Then watch this to learn how to simplify and accelerate the writing process: https://youtu.be/vith10gG8L4?si=fZH20...

In two hours, you've already started making your own visual novel game! Oh! But what will you do for art?!!!!! No sweat. You can install DAZ Studio for free. You can search that or just go here: www.daz3d.com/install-manager-info

Join the forums to pick up some tips and tricks, dig around YouTube for visual assisted tutorials, and EXPLORE THE STORE for assets that will help you customize your characters. And for scenes? Well, if you don't have any ideas for the environments you need, you can just buy them from the store as well. Follow the content as you go, and you'll be putting your Python skills to work before bed. How? Ren'Py is based on Python.

Have fun making your first [visual novel] game!
