EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: THE POWER OF EMPATHY

In a fast-paced, competitive world, it is easy to forget the most powerful leadership tool we have — empathy.

A few months ago, a CEO in Lagos nearly lost her top team. She was brilliant but distant. After an emotional intelligence workshop, she began listening — really listening. She started asking her team, “How are you coping?” instead of “Why are you late?” Within months, her people reconnected, productivity doubled, and loyalty returned.

In Nairobi, a postgraduate student told me his supervisor changed his life — not by easing deadlines, but by understanding his challenges. When the student’s mother fell ill, the professor did not scold him for missing meetings. He simply said, “Take care of her first. Your research can wait.” That act of empathy kept the student from dropping out — and today, he is completing his PhD.

In Gaborone, a small business owner lost half his staff during COVID-19. Instead of firing more people, he called each one, listened to their fears, and found ways to share the little income they had among all staff members without anyone losing their job. When business recovered, those same employees refused better offers elsewhere. Why? Because he saw them.

Empathy does not make you weak — it makes you wise.

It is the bridge between authority and influence.

Between title and trust.

Whether you are leading a company, managing a classroom, or guiding postgraduate students — remember:

People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.

What is that one moment when someone’s empathy changed your journey? Share it below — your story might inspire someone else.
