Although I’m still an amateur mechanic, whom learns from my dad and the internet, I believe that low transmission fluid typically causes delayed P to D shifting. Regarding automatic transmissions (I’m slightly unfamiliar with manual and automatic transmission differences), valve body research uncovers the valve body’s main objectives: gear ratio control, throttle and computer based up and down shifting, and gear engagement. Depending on driver or computer gear requests, fluid flows through designated channels to engage proper ratios. Although P to D shifting may fall onto faulty valve body function, I would recommend one to check transmission fluid level. Transmission fluid ensures smooth shifting and proper pressure; if transmission fluid remains low, clutch may “lag”, due to low pressure. Overall, the transmission requires further diagnosis. Delayed engagement makes me feel worried that the transmission may suffer from various underlying issues. Not to mention, if transmission fluid is already low, I believe the best option is to at least pull the drain plug to check for shavings.

Sometimes it's a shift sensor. But if fluid is low may have a leak. Some Lucas transmission fluid is a good thing to add with a high mileage automatic transmission . ✅

Can be lots of different reasons. Cvt transmission, electrical control, old mechanical, need to a little more specific. Some car won't go into drive from reverse unless you're at a complete stop

The car probably has low blinker fluid, or the muffler bearings are shot...
