I never saw a “Strategic Hydrant” when I filmed this video. I thought they were all strategic. I wonder if they’re fed by a larger or higher pressure source?

@Saxonx500

Yes they are larger diameter mains and identified as strategic because of the surrounding risk (usually industrial but could be rural too) - all hydrants used to be tested annually by local crews but to save time - so they could put up smoke detectors instead, hydrant technicians were employed and they don’t do nearly as many, so those that are key or strategic are focused on…. Pumps now have laptops which have a gps map of all hydrants and their size but they can be hard to find as many are tarmacced over, or overgrown when needed now ……

@highlandoutsider

This is the hydrant that is in charge of the map table where they push lil model hydrants around with shuffle board sticks 👍

That is probably what all dogs call fire hydrants...😉

The tie going through the middle of the H made me ponder how the sign was fixed, it almost looks as if it is floating.

Maybe it is fed by an alternative water source than local in case there is a problem with mains they can swap on to mains 2.0

Tactical.😅

As a firefighter, nothing goes from strategic to tactical in a short span as a hydrant. As lead man on my truck, my window breaks & “forcible car moves” record stands @ 13. 100% BMW’s. You’re not surprised, are you?

As opposed to a tactical hydrant?

Thankfully it's not a mobile hydrant .... "Oh 😱 it's walked off again" catch that hydrant!!

No difference, that's just an attention getting sign so the fire dept can find it at a glance from far away, or it's buried under snow and hasn't been dug out yet. Also can be used alone with an arrow on it to point to a hydrant elsewhere
